The Materialworks Material Edition "Translucency 1" is devoted to a property that occurs in highly differing materials. This is why such emphasis was placed on selecting a broad scope of materials that would show the complexity of translucency, its diverse application areas and gradations.
When we use the term "translucency" we describe a material’s partial perviousness to light. It is a property that numerous natural materials already possess or can attain in a number of ways. For instance, translucency can be achieved through perforation, matt finishing, corrosion, engraving, adhesion, printing or the addition of certain materials. The best-known translucent materials are the human skin, leaves, paper, frosted glass or wax. Since time immemorial translucent materials have played a pivotal role in architecture and interior design.
In addition to modulating light many translucent materials have long since assumed further functions relating to the lightness of the construction, insulation, but also providing UV, cold, heat or noise protection. New technologies have even enabled the manufacture of translucent stone or concrete.
